Heyyyy everyone!! Finally managed to find some time to update this. Having an absolutely amazing time so far, definitely won’t be able to fit in everything that’s happened so far but going to put in as much as possible…
We’ve had two weeks in our schools now. My partner Rachel and I have to get up at 6am Monday to Thursday to walk to school which isn’t actually too bad, although one day we were late so we got a boda boda which is a crazy taxi motorbike thing that’s really cheap to get. Teaching so far has been awesome. The kids were sp shy at first and found it hard to understand our English but we are getting more into it now. We’re teaching P6 which is actually like a mixture of 12 -18 year olds! And we do science, maths, enlgish and art with them. Oh and PE which they love. We’ve also done some after school art and reading with the younger classes and we attempted to do netball club afterschool with a group of about 30 girls but the whole school ended up joining in and it was chaos but really good fun!
The teachers at our school are so lovely and they always laugh when we try and speak to them in a bit of Lusogan which is the language they speak. They give us lots of food as gifts and just to eat at break and lunch which is actually becoming a bit of a nightmare because although it’s been nice to try what they have.. most of it isn’t that nice. We’ve had a lovely mix of pocho and beans, porridge made out of maize, sweet tea, jack fruit, cassava chips and chipatis. Rachel and I are now trying to think of excuses to try and get home for lunch!
The house we are staying in is amazing as well and I’m really enjoying being with the girls J we get on really well. Getting used to the longdrop and no running water but bugs are still a problem and we’ve had some mice and a rat as well. Haha not making it sound great, but it has been fun. We’ve cooked soime pretty good meals so far and had a go at washing our clothes. We have chicken Tuesdays each week where we go into the local town to meet up with the other AV’s that live near us get a meat fix because we mostly eat fresh vegetables from little local sellers and like rice or pasta. And weekends we have come into Jinja so far for both which is the biggest town near us to shop and go out. We travel around on these crazy buses called matatus which they cram full of people and occasionally the odd live chicken as well. Africa itself is beautiful as well and the people literally love seeing white people around and are amazingly friendly towards us.
There’s lots more to write but that’s all for now. Missing everyone lots! xxx
